OK, here's my attempt ...

It takes a long time before a balloon deflates, so it will travel quite a distance before it pops or dies. So, while it's floating somewhere in neverland, there are plenty of things that can happen. But the only two things that really concern me as an Environmental nerd is this:

First - it gets caught in power lines, which can cause a power failure since mylar balloons serve as an electrical conductor. I heard in the news just recently that they are creating a legislature that will ban the sale of mylar balloons. I think it's rediculous to do that, and will probably not pass.

Second - most of the balloons, for some reason or another, always ends up in the ocean. This is very, very BAD!!!! Whales and other sea creatures mistakes this for food. They ingest it ... and you can guess what happens after. Not good! When we went whale watching in Monterey, you wont believe how many balloons we had to fish out. Probably saw more balloons than whales. Our guide told us that he encounters this a lot and he is very concern about the damage it can cause.

So, moral of the story is not to ban the sale of balloons. But educate people of the harm that they can do if they release it into the air.
